On CentOs / RHEL

rpm --import
rpm --import
cat > /etc/yum.repos.d/vmware-tools.repo << __EOF__
name=VMware Tools
# Without X11:
yum install vmware-tools-esx-kmods vmware-tools-esx-nox kmod-vmware-tools-vmxnet3
# With X11:
# yum install vmware-tools-esx-kmods vmware-tools-esx kmod-vmware-tools-vmxnet3

On Ubuntu

Force vmxnet loading

If you have a linux instance that does not load the vmxnet driver (and keeps using pcnet32 instead) you must rebuild the initrd including the needed kernel driver. In Debian:

  • Edit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add vmxnet
  • Rebuild the initrd, issuing update-initramfs -u
  • Reboot
